Roles and Duties of DRED

The roles and duties of Department of Community Development are as follows:
  • To prepare short, medium and long-term rural economic development plans;
  • To develop banking schemes and promote and encourage people to create village banks, rice banks, animal banks, agricultural materials banks, etc., through example and information;
  • To prepare all the documentation which allows rural people to benefit by using credit and loans, by setting up credit association organizations;
  • To encourage people to save money through promoting and publicizing the saving money group/committee, so that they know the guidelines applying to measures to protect the saving funds;
  • To administrate and advise about the preparation of accounting systems for rural credit;
  • To promote and encourage people, associations or private sector interests to establish small enterprises and handicraft centers in rural areas; and
  • To explore market opportunities and marketing information. This can increase the livelihood of getting a reasonable price for farm produce. Making a positive contribution to farmer and handicraft's center income, helps to raise the living standards in rural areas.
